How many firemouths do you think you can have in a 60g? I have 2 in there rn. Id like to get a few more if possible.

Footprint of the tank would be a better way to tell than volume. a 48" x 12" is way better than a very tall 24" x 12". As simple example.
I would start with 6 to 8 and see how the sex ratios turn out. Thorichthys do well in groups . I have had five or so pairs all spawning in the same tank before and it’s fascinating to watch.
always trial and error with cichlids but you have chosen one of the best species of c/a cichlid for a group approach. I would not add any other cichlid species just some swordtails as dither fish would be good.

I must add I am in no way in favour of over crowding American cichlids ,thorichthys are one of the few exceptions to this mind set. They live in groups in the wild and so a group approach in aquariums work well providing correct maintenance and line of site breaks are provided.
So your saying add 6-8 more firemouths and add some thorichthys as well as swordtails for dithers? I got two firemouths right now.
I didnt know firemouths did great in groups. Interesting… I always wanted firemouths, they’re perfect looking fish!! The thorichthys are gorgeous as well!!
Fire mouths are thorichthys. Thorichthys Meeki is the scientific name for fire mouths .
And no, I’m saying go for a total of 6 to 8 and see how things work out.
if you have say 3 males and 3 to 5 females you should be good to go. If you end up with mostly males, then you may need to reduce numbers if they become to aggressive.
Firemoiths are extremely hard to sex when young so you will have to grow them on and see what you get.
