I thought I would share a few old photos of a very attractive race of Amphilophus alfari. They are a population from Lake Arenal, Costa Rica. We used to refer to these as Amphilophus sp "blue face". Most likely they are just a very attractive strain of alfari. All mine are long gone and I haven't seen them offered in some time. Not the best photos but all I could find of them.

vERY NICE INDEED :) Dang caps...

wow thats cool. i had never seen these before thanks!

Nice looking fish. I never seen them before. Are they that rare to the hobby?

Someone needs to find more these Astatheros ... even more attractive than A. robertsoni!!!

Wish you guys were around while I was trying to sell them.
I don't know if anyone is still working with them. They are rare in the hobby. Not all the alfari from Lake Arenal look like this, just certain populations. I received my group from a friend of mine who picked them up from Don Conkel. I believe Conkel lost his breeding stock due to bad weather. My friend is no longer working with them either.

very nice! All the fish I have seen you post are very nice!

What do you keep currently in the way of Cichlids? Just curious

You would be disappointed with what I am currently keeping. Just a bunch of odds and ends left. I used to have about 30 different species I was working with at any given time, concentrating on the rarest of the Central cichlids. After nearly 2 decades, it felt like I was just keeping the same fishes but with slightly different color. Once you've kept most all the Centrals, you see the patterns in the care of the different genera of Centrals. You can pretty much know how they will behave, what conditions to keep them under, and how long you have to keep them before they will spawn.
Reminds me of when I was going to trade some fish to a well known author and Central American cichlid collector. I was very excited to meet him and see his fishroom. Well when I got there it was a nice fishroom but about half the tanks were empty and he was just keeping a few old Centrals. The rest was plecos and I even saw a pair of albino oscars. I thought why is this guy who's kept all kinds of rare Centrals and even discovered and introduced new species into the hobby doing keeping plecos and albino oscars.
Well,I have some oscars and old odds and ends now. But I still enjoy the fishes I have and enjoy chatting about cichlids. Let me know if anyone is still working with this Amphilophus alfari population. I wouldn't mind keeping them again.
