This fish was sold to me as an Amarillo from a LFS. I have a little bit of doubt just going off the pictures of the ones sold by COTA. Mine has a reddish/copper color and the pictures of the COTA ones I have seen appear to be more gray. Anyone have any experience with these fish and have any idea what it is? This guy or gal is probably around 4”-5” right now.

How long ago did you get it? It looks Amarillo, but still stressed from a move.

I have had it for almost 2 months. It’s definitely the tank boss so it shouldn’t be too stressed I would think.

I had mine over a decade ago, and they went to an aquarist in Iowa.
They do go thru a number if color changes as theygrwo.

Since its been over a decade I really can't tell, or remember, and some Amphilophines (especially the Nicaraguan lakes group) are very hard to tell apart unless location point ancestry is given by the seller.
You also have that black substrate that can influence the colors any cichlid shows.
I always used a natural color sand substrate, which may have prompted mine to present lighter .
