I've figured out what Vieja I'm getting so now I'm trying to figure out what Amphilophus to get. I love the barred ones so it's between Chacho, Amarillo, and Barred Midas. Any pictures and/or info about them would help. Are the barred the same as regular midas b/c I had a pair about five years ago so I know something about them. I will be getting them at 4" in size and they will be going in a 75 for now. Thanks.

I picked the barred midas, but really you can not go wrong with any of them. All 3 are great choices.

You do realize that down the line you wont be able to keep a vieja with a midas/amarillo.... they will eventually kill each other in so small of a tank..... the chancho itself gets tooo big... I think a solo midas would be your best option...

Yes, I know. They won't be going with the Vieja. The two of them will be going in a 75 by themselves. I plan on getting them a 100 or 125 6' tank. I have a divider ready and have a spare empty tank if needed.

ive red that chanchos are extremely slow growers.. and are aggressive towards tankmates, but again, that deoendent on the fishes temperament. i vote barred midas

I was leaning towards barred midas. I loved my old orange midas and miss them. I would assume that the barred would act the same and make a good wet pet also.

Only get a barred midas if you're okay with the possibility of it turning orange with age... most do ime. If you want a midas with bars there's a costa rican race that I think stays barred for the most part. You'll see them listed as 'San Juan Black' on some lists.
I've never kept them but I've heard a lot of people who have say that amarillo are the best looking barred amph and the ones I've seen in person confirm this for me. Also full of attitude!

Thanks, Ed. I love the attitude that they have. That's the main thing I miss about my old midas. Make good wet pets. I'm going to look into the Amarillo some more now.
