I just got this fish as a trade. The kid who brought him in said he picked him up at a local fish auction as a new species of Amphilophus. So exactly what is it?

Sorry for the oversized picture. It's not the greatest quality but he does seem to have quite a bit of red on his dorsal and anal fins.

Sorry, should work now.

Looks Like a Barred Midas. Need a better pic.

Its impossible to tell from that picture, and also it can be hard to identify an Amphilophus at that size.
It could be any of the following:

A. Citrinellum 'barred'
A. Labiatus 'barred'
A. sp. ‘red Isletas’
A. Hoogaboomorum
A. sp. 'costarican redhead'
A. xiloaensis

Or a hybrid combination of any of the above.

Your best bet is to grow it on a bit then post pics from the tank.

Sorry buddy.... its a tough one.

or it could also be one of the following

A. zaliosus
A. sagittae 'barred'
A. chancho
A. flaveolus

you should probably grow it out Adam and put one of these cubans I have as his tankmate :naughty:

Thats right VRWC, we could even add mor possible candidates. The Amphilophus genus is full of very similar looking species, some would be impossible to distinguish at small sizes.

If the kid who traded with you described it as a 'new' Amphilophus, A.Flaveolus and A. chancho on VRWC's list are two of the newest discoveries of this genus. Along with A. astorquii.

Lol, you want my Argentea?

I'll see if I can get a better picture of him. Thanks everyone for the replies.
