Hello,

I want to create a few threads whereby any knowledgeable keepers who have studied Cichlids in depth can compare two different species in the Central American family. The idea is to get to know a little more about what their capabilities are, from gathering food, altering their environment, defending territory, their overall strength and size as well as how they both compare with their reaction to different kind of water conditions.

In this particular thread we will compare two great Cichlids, the Red Devil (Amphilophus Labiatus) and the Jack Dempsey (Rocio Octofasciatum).

Amphilophus Labiatus - Red Devil

**Compared to**

Rocio Octofasciatum - Jack Dempsey

What I am interested in knowing is how do they compare in their capabilities to:

* Hunt for food - how effective are they are catching live food

* Defend territory - their typical characteristics and efficiency in defence?

* Strength - their overall strength compared, jaw strength, teeth, body power. body shape, natural tools for the use of power for altering the shape of their environment?

* Parents - they are both good parents but how do they compare when raising their young?

* Water - does this have an influence on any of their capabilities above or alter their behavior in anyway?

This is not a thread to determine which one is the better one to keep - they are both excellent to keep - but a thread to compare how both types of species compare against each other in the way they behave. Also any input can be related to captive or wild specimens.

Thanks for any input you provide
