While I wait for my Ellicons to grow, I'm thinking of not wasting the time and breeding my Ellioti with something else. I currently have an A. longimanus and a P. splendida, both I am 75% sure are female (I honestly don't know how to tell, even with venting). What do you guys reckon I should cross my Ellioti with?
A. longimanus will produce a more Amphilophus type of fish, and perhaps bring out a redder belly since the A. longimanus does have a red belly (different from the Ellioti's, but eh). Plus the fierce personality. Also I really want to cross my Ellioti with an Amphilophus alfari, but they're non-existent here in the Aussielands, so part of me is going for the A. longimanus because it's similar enough. Makes me feel sorta nice-ish.
On the other hand a P. splendida will definitely produce an interesting body shape, and both the Thorichthys and Petenia genera have few hybrids with other genera, so might be really interesting. The mouth/jaw structure would definitely be interesting, and even if my current P. splendida doesn't look that nice (yet, still juvie), hopefully it is one of those more colorful morphs of the species and the offsprings will benefit from that. Also it grows large. Still, it doesn't have as much color as the A. longimanus, so yeah.
I also have a Herichthys carpintis which I'm sure is female, but eh.
So what do you guys think? P. splendida or A. longimanus?
