Hi,

Yesterday i went to an amusement park here in MOntreal,Quebec Canada. Is it a waterpark. One of the rides is build into some small lake full of fish you can walk alongs the peer and rides and watch the fish swim.

I am saying this because at one point i saw one big black fish surface. My father is saying that is it a common carp. But are common carp black ? I thought they were like golden in color here. It looked like a giant black shark. There were also other small fish swimmin which looked like small black oscar or some kind of chiclids which is believed to be also common carp. Hard to tell but those one were no more than 12" if not 8" the big black thing that surfaced was at least 24" if not more.

I doubt is it tropical fish because of the climate we have. THose fish would die in the wintertime. So it's probably common coldwater fish. What do you think it was ?

Some koi (aka carp) can be black and easily reach the 24" mark.

The supposed "cichlids" you saw were probably some native species that look similar to cichlids. I'm not savvy on native fish in Montreal, but here in the U.S. we have many native fish that do look cichlid-like to a layman.

The smaller fish that you thought looked like oscars were probably just some kind of sunfish, probably bluegill.

The bigger fish probably was a carp, some of them can be black. No telling what kind without seeing it. Their diet and the water they live in also has an effect on how dark they are.
