I'd just like to inquire if any of you might be able to recommend a non-cichlid species that would be capable of sharing a tank amicably with an Oscar or Jack Dempsey. I'd prefer a solitary/non-shoaling type of fish. Thanks in advance.

Most types of larger catfish, though you'd need to check aggression of species. Synodontis euruptus (sp?) Is a good candidate, but it has a finicky temperament

Thanks, much appreciated. Would I be correct in assuming that largely being a bottom lurker, it'll be unlikely to challenge American cichlids over territory? Again, thanks

Mine was quite territorial, it could easily defend against my Oscar and convict, depends on the temperament; they usually pick a hiding spot and defend that bit

I have 2jack Dempsey's 1green terror and 2convicts with convict fry in one tank

If you are wanting a non-cichlid species, my favourites that I keep in with my cichlids are hoplo catfish (Admittedly do better in a shoal), and polypterus.

What size tank? With these fish it will be largely based on tank size.

Depending on if they're legal to keep, a local madtom species might work. They're kinda like mini bullheads.
