Ive been recently getting into the gardening/planters hobby. I am going to be setting up a 40 gallon breeder aquaponics set up for some fancy goldfish. I always loved fancy goldfish such as white capped orandas and red/white ryukins but i got bored of them quickly. I had always purchased the ones from petsmart and was never a fan of them. I found the american strain fancy goldfish are not as good looking as the asian ones (just my personal preference). Also at the time i also was never really knowledgable building my own filtration so i neglected them and they unfortunately passed away. I will be rekindling this affection for goldfish by getting some China Strain Goldfish for this 40 gallon breeder. I will have a 20 gallon sump on the bottom and an aquaponics DIY planterbox filled with ceramic media on the top. I will be posting pictures in the future when i finally begin the process. I will have 4-5 goldfish in this tank (i will upgrade them when it gets big enough for the office in a 75). I will be starting off with some easy gardening plants after some thurough research. Since my system will not be a flood/drain system but only a continuious flow, i decided on Bush string beans (yellow wax and green snap) and some spinach. it'll be a continunous flow but with clay media for the roots. I am still debating whether the sump should be a wet dry or full submerged. This tank will sit in front of my window. i will paint the bottom and the back of the aquarium so sunlight does not penetrate through and cause an algae bloom. I am not using this to lessen water changes. i will still be doing weekly water changes on this tank. The tank will be a low tech sump with overflow box and barebottom. at the same time the sump will have a heater to keep water at 70 degrees so the plant's roots will survive the lasting cold spring/winter days of NJ. the tank setup itself will be so that if the results are not to my liking i will just tear down the aquaponics system and think of a new idea for my outdoor pond. I will post pictures and make a thread here. any tips or suggestions are appreciated. criticism as well, i take it as experience. What i am most afraid of is eating the remains of my fish that my plants had absorbed... i am not talking about fish poop and nitrogen waste. im talking about the coloration chemicals in commerical aquarium food. Fish feed for farm raised fish do not have coloration additives... so i am very skeptical about it. I'll post some pictures of the building as well.

I would switch to a aquaculture pellet and water plants/veggies for golds. Also may consider removing sump or converting to fish tank as it may rob nutrients from your growbed. Sounds like fun

I usually recommend starting off with lettuce and moving up as it has been the easiest to grow for me, as your growbed matures add different plants

I see! your plants look lovely! the only issue i have with the feeding of aquaculture pellets is that my priority of this project is for fancy goldfish. I'd like to buy some color enhancing foods to increase their appeal. I am probably going to start them off young with Hikari's fancy goldfish pellets as their coloration results are phenomenal. The plants are actually priority #2 lol as i am planning a garden project when it gets warm enough. i have actually started a worm farm culture for vermicompost and will be using that as a natural soil base... I only really wanted to experiement on the aquaponics for this tank as goldfish are extremely dirty and their nitrate output is insane... If this goes well or bad i may start a large aquaponics set up to a simple stingray tank (i have some stingrays i got and they arent exactly up to par to my other stingrays. but i keep them for enjoyment.)
For my plan - i wasnt planning on depending on the goldfish to produce nitrates for my plants to thrive. my plan was to have the plants to just utilize the nitrates my goldfish produce. so the sump is still needed as a filtration system... What fish did you have in this system?

Yes, its a continuous flow. Hard to tell but water is constantly flowing thru cinder C carbene

These growbeds(there is actually 3 150g) filter a 2000g plywood build. This one( I have a few others)I set up as a fish rescue or sort. I just stocked every fish I every had acquired thru the purchase of used aquariums and word of mouth from others. Currently I have mixed assortment of a golden channel catfish, probably at 20in(came from a used 20g), 5 Pangasius at 12-18in, 2 Pimelodus blochii, 3 tinfoil barbs, 3 common plecs, Featherfin Syno, breeding severum and white nile tilapia pairs. :0 i want a ID shark too! cept my rays will kill them in a heart beat...

When they are well kept they are quite impressive, mine seem to have such a mellow temperament; I want mine to thicken out a bit and will get pics. Now your rays I'm envy of, they are restricted here but I always wanted to try an outdoor ray pond.
