Hello!

I've been doing aquariums for 25 years, and I've been posting on web forums for about 10. Oddly, I've never joined an aquarist forum of any sort, so I figured it was about time!

A tragedy in my 75 gallon tank is what sparked this, actually. In recent years, I have not had as much time to devote to my aquariums (I have two at present, the 75 and a 45), so have gone with low loads and easy-to-maintain stuff. My 75 contains various rainbows, a pleco, a leftover Malawi something-or-other, three large-ish tinfoil barbs, and until last week, eight huge clown loaches which I have had for about 7 years.

Last week, I noticed the loaches had ich really bad. I hadn't even looked in the tank for about 3 days, just dump in food and turn lights on and off. Well, my first thought was the heater had crashed, so I put my hand in the water. Temp feels fine, so I scratch my head over it a bit, and go and buy some malachite green. I know it's not the ideal for loaches, but I've always had success as long as I used it carefully. After treating full-strength for one day and half-strength for two, the ich was still there. I put my hand in the water again. COLD. So I replace the heater and continue treatment. All of the loaches died over a two-day period. I should have been more thorough in my initial assessment of the heater. I suppose the deaths were a combination of ich that got a little out of hand, and the stress of the medication.

So anyway, I've wanted to do something new with the tank for a long time, but I loved the clowns too much to trade or sell them off. But now, alas, they are gone, and I might soon decide to redo the tank entirely.

So I'm here to cruise the forum, and maybe come across some suggestions, and get advice, etc. Just wanted to say Hey.

Hi Bigga fish and welcome to MFK! A 75 gallons is a decent growout tank
for would be monsters. So what kind of fish are you interested in having? would you like to have a solitary fish , semi community?? What sort of fish interests you ?

Welcome! Be careful....this place is very addicting. There are some awesome setups so browse peoples galleries...I'm sure you'll get tons of Ideas here too.

I don't think I could be happy with a solitary fish, but tempt me. Make a suggestion or two, if you would.

But I was thinking more along the lines of a small group of a single species, or possibly a community. I have always been fascinated with fish that have very visible teeth, too. Mean lookin' guys. No Pirahnas....tried those when I was a kid. Just very skittish and uninteresting, IMO. But what about Hydrocynus? (I think that's the genus, the tiger fish?) Are they all too large, or are there species which might be an appropriate size? I saw some in a pet store over a decade ago, when I was living in Tucson, but they were buku $$. Probably still are. I don't know anything about them.....maybe they can't even be kept communally.

I'm looking for something new to me. I've kept all the commoner African and SA cichlids.....terrors, oscars, angels, discus, haps, fronts, you name it. Never kept bichirs, snakeheads, eels, or pike cichlids, so don't know much about them, though. I've avoided the oddballs generally....although I have briefly kept Arowanas and also a clown knife or two. But I'm not opposed to trying them.

Ideally, I want an active group which is not too shy, as they are in a high-traffic room. I don't have the space right now for a larger tank, but I may be opening a photography studio locally in the next few months. If that happens, I will move the 75 there, and likely upgrade it to something at least twice as big eventually.

Thanks for the welcome! I can't see the photos. Is that just b/c I don't have enough posts?

Once you get 5 posts give the server 30 min or so to update then you can see.

You should look into some geophagus for the 75....AWESOME fish!

For a solitary fish a flowerhorn would be sweet.

Never heard of it, but I just Googled. Interesting.

Definitely solitary, eh? Nothing else can go with it? Where would I get one? I live in a fairly small town with less-than-appealing local options. Do many folks order from online sellers?

There are several places to order online and get some nice ones....or you may have to drive a little to find one. They arent always solitary, but they get fairly large so you wouldnt want to keep much else with them. Usually they are agressive, but in some cases (like the one i had) they can be kept with others.
