So, around April 20, I brought home a flame angel who got beat up by my damsel. I'm assuming that in my efforts to get the damsel out, my Blenny got smushed and long story short, my angel wound up with fin rot. It got the fin all the way down before I got the ammonia low enough to treat the infection. The whole while, the angel held on like a trooper. Super active little fish. My question is, the healing went gang busters the first couple weeks but seems to have slowed. Is this as far as it will heal or has it slowed for some other reason?

Forgive the horrible quality, they're all camera shy.

One more question while I'm asking about the angel...I've seen the angel and dominant clown kinda get into scrapes when the angel gets too close to the clowns cave. The clown flares and snaps and the angel turns onto its side and flips at the clown. I'll try to get a vid of it. But is it anything to be concerned about or is the clown just sayin no trespassing?

Unfortunately there is a place below the fins that if damaged, the fins will not return. You'll see this same question from time to time on the cichlid forums, both fin rot and bites. I can't say for sure 100% it won't grow back just that the possibility does exsist and your angel looks like it fits that senario - too much deep tissue loss.

ohhhh....I was hoping you wouldn't say that....the poor little guy....Its not gonna affect him at all is it? I mean, I didn't stunt his growth or shorten his life or anything like that did I?

Hard to say - If I remember correctly you had some water quality issues, ammonia reappeared, and you performed good husbandry by jumping right on it , correcting the problem swiftly. Ammonia and Nitrite are instant posion, kill on contact. Nitrate is a slow killer. Long term exposure to high levels of Nitrate effects the immune system bringing on disease and in extreme cases stunted growth. You keep on doing what your doing and you'll provide a great home for whatever the duration of the angel's life is. Minimum 10% weekly w/c's and keeping nitrate at or below 20ppm for FOWLR. Also Marine fish usually don't live half as long as freshwater fish in captivity.

I did not know that marine fish lived shorter lives in captivity. Interesting. (vs fresh...you know what I meant)

Thank you for your reassuring comments. I worry so much about the little guy...

One more question, do I have to be especially careful about introducing new tank mates because of his injury? Or do I just treat him like any other angel?

Oh, I knew that. I meant like, could he handle tankmates that a normal, not fin rotted, angel could handle...Like that kind of thing. I didn't know if there were some fish that would see a weakness in his injury and try to kill him. He seems ready enough to put Dolly in her place when she gets all ****** and snappy though.

Thank you so much for the help!!
