I have two types of Angels, Sunset Blushers and Koi. I've separated the best of the bunch to breed. My question is. Is it best to keep the Sunsets with Sunsets, Koi with Koi or should I even worry?

Depends, do you want a pair of sunsets and a pair of koi? They'll readily breed with each other.

I've set up pairs of each as I want fry from both. What I was thinking was letting the rest pair off as they wish and the Sunsets would add more orange to the current Koi strain.

I just don't know if it would diminish the Koi strain by breeding with another form.

Depending on whether your koi is (Gm/Gm S/S) or (Gm/g S/S) and if it crosses with a sunset (g/g S/S). If you koi are (Gm/Gm S/S) they're offspring will still be 100% koi after being crossed with the sunsets, because they will become (Gm/g S/S). But, if they're (Gm/g S/S) you will get a 50/50 mix of koi and sunsets. And unless you can contact where you bought them and ask the breeder for their genetics, you won't know which your kois are. Either way you won't loose the koi trait.

Corollary to these is that you may establish the genetic makeup of a koi by pairing it with a Sunset Blusher. If all the fries turn out to be Kois then the Koi parent is Gm/Gm S/S. If you get a mix of Sunsets and Kois in the fries then the koi parent is Gm/g S/S.
