I have a 75 gallon tank that was going to be a US native tank but I decided to go back to my original plan which is a tropical tank with angels being the focus. I am however kinda stumped on what to get for tank mates. My mom would like to see a nice community tank which would be cool but I am always in love with some predator oddball. Any suggestions or what has worked for you guys? I was thinking of doing swords or rainbows with either an african butterfly fish or maybe some kind of small eel. my tank has sand bottom with a mix of small pebbles with a few rocks along with lots of hide spots from drift wood and my plants are all bulbs (was going to do a sunfish tank). Filtration is via sponge filter.

i would prefer = community discus fish, some loaches maybe, an elephant fish, tetras, rasboras, swordtails, barbs, some guppies. but an african butterfly can do, but i dont recommend eel(i assume tht it's very unusual for a serpent in a tank, up to you though) :)

Be carful with with Tera's as they can nip at fins and fully grown angels will eat the smaller tetra species like neons etc.

never kept african butterfly fish but I would imagine a guppy would be an easy snack and I think the angles would nip at it's extended fin rays of the ABF and also try guppies tails of they was the fancy type.

Rasboras should work with most stuff

A lot if barbs are aggressive and need large groups so research a lot

Loaches are good but remember some get large

I would also recommend some corydoras and a peacock eel

Good luck, what angel are you getting?

Not sure. If I can get my hands on a wild type I would, but my understanding is that they are very sensitive. Luckily I have a very nice LFS that has some locally bred angels and they appear to be a mix of blacks and smokeys. They were like nickel size when I was there about two weeks ago. How many angels can be kept in a 75?

If your tank is cycled properly and you keep on top of maintenance they are fairly easy.

It's difficult to say, especially because I haven't got massive amounts of experience with them, I would say 4-6 would be fine.

I have 3 dantum angels and when I first put them in 2 of them nipped the dorsal fin almost completely off of the 3rd but now they have settled they are fine, so don't be to disheartened if they don't get on straight away :)

some places for them to hide if they are getting picked on helps a lot

You can keep almost any other community fish Angels. I have apair in my 125 community. They will chase eachother but dont bother any other fish. A group of rainbows would look nice. Maybe a couple of Albino Bichirs for the bottom along with a pack of Cory's or loaches.

Just got a pair of angles today (seem gold like but will see how they color up now there in my tank), I still want to get at least four more. Also have a baby whale in there too but will see how that guy goes, his fellow buddy kicked it within 24 hours of purchase but I know the Mormyrids are super iffy imo.

Cory catfish are ok with angels. A nice school of 10+ will look great on the bottom. I've had good success with severums and angels. I would suggest getting more angels. If the two you got are not a pair one will usually harass the other to death.

I've got a baby whale in my 125 with a pair of gold Angels. They should be fine. Just make sure it has a cave to hide in. Or else it will be real skidish. Good Luck
