ok so i started with about 50 fry two weeks ago. and even some more one week ago. im down to maybe 10. they are in a 10g tank, covered filter intake, fake plants and decor and gravel. i feed 3 times a day small amounts of my fry food and do 50% water changes every other day and vaccume left over food. temp is at 78 all params are fine. i will add though (and this might make u go duh) but i have a snail infestation in this tank. pond snails i think. they have cone shaped shells with black tips. not mts. not ramhorns, and not apples. could and would the snails pick of the sleeping fry at night? if its not the snails is it bad genes from the parents that our causing the low survival rate. dad never fertilizes all the eggs. always like 50% mom lay s hundreds though. anyways any help would be great.

First off, it is not the snails. What kind of filter is on the tank? Perhaps there is too much current in the tank. Also fry are sometimes sensitive to large water changes. Try changing a lesser amount of water.

The parents are not with the tank. the flow isnt strong considering its slowed down with the sponge covering the intake. its a regular hob whisper 10 . so i should remove the snails? i thought they were being eaten at night since the fry sleep in the grvael. Well hopefully with the batch thats with the parents now i wont do such huge water changes. i was always under the impression water changes were extremely important for fry.

Water changes are very important for fry and it doesn't matter how large or small you do them. I've done 50% and 20%, got the same results in the end. The Angelfish strains we have around today are very tolerant of rapi water changes, so I doubt that that's the problem. The snails are more then likely picking off the fry. When I had a huge population of Apples in my Guppy tank, they would eat the fry laying on the gravel at night. They will eat anything they can catch so fry would be an easy meal.

there really hasnt been breeder that ive spoken to that hasnt suggest water changes for fry. and ive raised alot of species over the years and ive never had fry die from 40-50% water changes every other day. or smaller more frequent. i dont think thats whats going on. the snails are bigger than some of the fry and number in the 100s. and some of the fry were barely free swimming. i can easidly see how it might be the snails. ive never had snails in a grow out tank. now if it is the snails how can i get rid of the snails effectivly without harming the fry? there are also snails in the parents tank :(

I agree with you. The water changes aren't the problem, its the snails. Well, I picked them all out by hand lol. I had hundreds of apple snails but refused to use chemicals and didn't have room for snail eating fish. There are few methods you can use to lure them to you, like putting in lettuce.
