I am currently growing out 10 angelfish and they are getting along really well. That got me wondering.... has anyone ever kept a school of angelfish together long-term without any real issues? If so I would like to hear all about it. Please also tell me the amount of angelfish kept and the size of the tank they were in. I have my angelfish in a 60 gallon until I upgrade to a larger 4 foot tank and I would love to keep as many of them as possible so I can't wait to hear you experiences with attempting this. Thanks

Once they reach maturity they will start pairing off and then you will have pairs isolating themselves to breed and fighting off all the other angels in the tank.

There's really nothing you can do to prevent that, short of keeping a single-sex tank. Even then, females will pair and spawn with each other.

I totally agree with this but I will add something, if one is weaker or singled out it will be attacked. A few people I know ran into this issue. If that happens there is no hope for that fish in that tank. Just rehome or put him in a different tank.

Grab some altum Angels, you won't be disappointed.

Probably no more than 2. Is this a 4' tank? Ideally you'd have one pair claim each side of the tank but if one spawns in the middle you'll still see lots of aggression.

I kept 5 in a 55 for a few years. There was one pair, with the other 3 being 2 males and 1 female. The pair kept to one side of the tank when they spawned, and the other 3 seemed to just stay clear of them. If they did happen to get to close, the female chased them away. The odd 3 would spawn from time to time, but not as regularly as the other pair. And when they did, the 3 of them got along fine, and the pair just left them alone. It was a community tank and none of the eggs from any of them ever made it through the night.

As stated above, if it is a 4' tank, I would not keep more than 2 pairs. Actually one pair would be best. If you get them as small juvis and let them pair off, then I would think you could keep 5 or 7 in a standard 90. With any luck you will get one dominant pair like I did, and the others will just leave them alone.

Yeah it will be a 4 foot tank. All of the angelfish are juveniles 6 are from the same batch then the other 4 are from two separate LFS

I'd grow them out and remove them as needed later on. Back when I had angelfish, I made the mistake of buying 3 unsexed. It turned out that I either had 1 male and 2 females or 2 males 1 female, but the subdominant male (unless it was a female acting male idk) decided to turn on the dominant fish and ripped its eye out and left it to die in a corner while pairing off with the fish I figured was female. They stayed together and looked really nice and all for a while, no eggs ever though, but eventually I lost them due to sandy.

Personally, I want to get a group of at least 6, grow them out, keep them with other fish (idc about breeding at this time) and remove what fish need removing as time goes on. That or if you want to spend some cash just buy an adult pair.

Agreed, in a four foot tank 2 pair tops. With some nice driftwood and plastic plants interwoven into the wood for site breakes you should have less diffaculty than a bare tank. 10 fish is too many for that tank.

At one time I had 6 young unsexed angels in my 4 ft 55 gallon. One pair developed and the other 4 angels were slowly picked off one by one until only the pair were left. I just upgraded them to a 6 foot 135 gallon and i'm thinking about trying to add more angels. This is a community tank so there are other fish. Will this work? Maybe, maybe not. But with the larger tank i'd like to give it a try.
