I bought 4 angel fish a few months back at the pet store. I am currently trying to figure out if they are male or female. I have not seen any eggs so far or any pairings. I dont know if they are even old enough to spawn yet. Could someone give me some help on this. They are currently in a 55 gallon tank with other fish. It is possible that there might be too many fish is the tank. I will give you a run down on whats in there for you to get an idea.

4 angelfish
2 goldfish
2 alge eaters
1 queen
3 catfish
10 mollies
and a fire newt.

I started out with the mollies and was breeding them, that is why there are so many. I am thinking of returning some of them since i have already had 3 females give birth. The babies are in a separate tank though.

There is no accurate way to visually sex angels. You must observe their tubes during a spawn - long & thin = male, short & blunt = female. I've found females to be smaller as a general rule, but this is far from 100% accurate.

You have an odd mix of fish in your tank and that is a lot of fish for a 55. Nonethless, whenever my angels bred, it didn't matter who their tankmates were or the size of the tank. When they were ready to breed, they bred...on the glass, filter tube, plants, driftwood, anywhere.

You can't sex them until they are ready to breed and by then a pair would already be showing courtship behavior. Also, you never told us the size of your angels. 12 to 14 months is optimal but they sometimes start at 8 to 9 months old.

Give it time and you should really sort out your stock. For example, goldfish and newts dont belong in there at all. Once your angelfish pair off...move them to their own 20 high
