Hello,

I am getting a lot of different suggestions regarding angelfish and how many need to be together in a tank. One of my local stores has a beautiful stock of various angelfish right now....I have been buying my saltwater fish from them for years and they are great with their fish. I have read that a keeper should either only have one in a tank or more than three/four. Any advice would be appreciated.....I have the tankspace for many of them....I am just not sure if I want to commit to a whole school of them.

By the way....I am referring to freshwater angelfish....not saltwater fish. I only brought up saltwater fish because that is what I typically buy from this store. I only want to know about the freshwater angelfish. Thanks.

+1 on the single, ihave one in a 4 ft. tank with sev brown knife and rafael ,angel is 6inand very happy.

You can do two if they pair up or if there is enough territory to avoid each other (like most cichlids). The idea behind not having three is that two might pair up and kill the third, so 4+ is recommended basically for a spread of aggression.

It all just depends on the individual fish you get and how they react to each other.

Ive kept a single before currently keeping 2 have done 3 or 4 and I have never had any real issues ever. The 2 i currently have i have raised together since they were dime size and they are now 3 inches and they are not pairing up and I have no issues with them.

I had 3 in my tank. When two paired off and bred, they became extremely aggressive towards all fish in the tank. Angelfish can be quite nasty when they pair off. They ended up killing the 3rd, and will fight away my large discus taht are much larger than them.
