I have 4 angels. 2 of them are showing their papilla. They keep switching off between the 2 that aren't showing. Does anyone know what's going on here?

It's possible you have a breeding pair. The male's papilla is "curved" and the female's is thicker and rounder.

If they're cleaning off a surface, watch closely for eggs and fertilization.

I had 9 breeding size angels in a 75g (for pairing) and have pulled two breeding pairs out of the tank so far.

Beautiful angels!

From what I can tell, that's preliminary. The papilla will be much more prevalent when they "get to business".

The pair will clean off the spot, she'll scoot her tube along the area and the male will be right behind her fertilizing.

If you're wanting to breed them, you may want to pull the other angels out once you know who your actual pair is. My extras love caviar.

Ok, the female is in the middle of laying eggs. The "male" is just eating them, not fertilizing at all, so I don't think she paired with anyone yet.

Don't worry about the male eating the eggs this time or the next, or possibly the next spawn too. It takes many tries for the pair to get it right, not as many as discus though. Just make sure to feed them good foods and keep the water clean.

Nice looking Angelfish!!

What size tank?

I figured out what happened. In the picture above, the one on the right and left are a pair. The one in the middle is another female that is not paired with the 4th angel (not pictured). All 3 were cleaning off the same spot. When the middle one started laying eggs, the female on the right (thought was a male) continued cleaning off the spot on the filter which entailed eating the eggs being laid. I will be setting up a 20g this week for the pair because probably nothing will survive if I leave them in the 55g. Thoughts?

Sweet! It is not uncommon for 2 females and 1 male to pair up. I've seen it may times. Good luck with raising them!!
