FEMA starts to allow groups in to start rescuing animals
North Shore Animal League America veterinarian, Dr. Eve Ognibene, has departed for Jackson, Mississippi where she will await the arrival of animals rescued out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
This is the first group of animals that FEMA has allowed to be transported out of the state by air since Hurricane Katrina hit.
In Jackson, a huge staging area has been set up to assess and treat the affected animals. Dr. Ognibene will be there to triage the rescued animals on our mobile unit as they are being transported to safety

Re: Health of Rescued Pets

I only examined about 15 of the animals but they seem to be in overall good health. They are suffering from the normal ailments shelter animals face like fleas and intestinal parasites.
A few of the kittens were dehydrated and are being given intravenous fluid and medication. The rest are being vaccinated and scheduled for spay or neuter. The kittens are very young and
are going to spend a few weeks in foster care until they are old enough to go up for adoption.
Otherwise, they rest should be up for adoption on Tuesday after surgery on Monday.
