Hi there folks,

Well, Finally got moved into apartment / condo and settled in (1,200 square feet) woo...

I have setup a 38Gallon bow front in the living room - Just finished and its cycling. This is going to be a well planted community tank.

Before I begin let me tell you this and why I an planning a 75 gallon tang tank.

The water where I live is just plain horrid - Well for a community tank that is =).

PH. 8.2 - 8.5
GH. 180++ (ppm)
KH. 240++(ppm)

What I've done for the living room community tank is purchased a nice RO/DI unit for a LFS here in Florida and I have it installed in the Laundry room with a RO pump to boost pressure.. 100+GPD unit. I am mixing the RO waste water with the RO/DI to get a nice PH / hardness mix..

What I plan on doing is using the "waste" RO water for the cichlid tank.

Questions;

I believe these water parms should be good for a tang. tank eh?

Furthermore, I figured the stocklist would be:

Neolamprologus brichardi
Calvus
Shellies...
... and I dont know what else at this moment.

OR should I just go straight into a mbuna tank again with these water parms?

Knowing my water params. I shouldn't need to buffer the water that much? Will be using shells, sand substrate + DIY rock 3d background (in the works)

I figured as much - thanks mike

@Mike - w. 75 Gallon tank - What #'s you think I should be able to achieve as far as stock. I was considering the following:

2 x Calvus - Altolamprologus calvus
2 Neolamps
5+ shellies
3 Moorii's???? (not sure about temperament)
2+ Julies.
1 Frontosa??

Should I use any water additives for the tangs? Such as Cichlid trace or RiftLake Trace?

I wouldn't use anything but dechlor with that water. My water is softer than yours and I spawn wild tangs w/o any additives. The only things I would omit from your stock list is the fronts (get too big and will eat anything once they get big enough) and the Moori. I'm assuming you mean tropheus??? They are best kept to a species only tank for a huge variety of reasons that I won't get in to. Otherwise, sounds good!

Great info Swk.

This would be my first tang tank - I've had mbuna setups in the past.

So.. Prime it is! =)

Suggestions for stock list?

BTW: this would be in master bedroom. 2bed 2bath condo / apartment. (Computer room would get OVERLY warm w/ the tank)

That sounds good to me. The brichardi multiply like rabits. Calvus are really cool, and so are the shellies. I dont think i would add another rock dweller like trets, too much compotition for space and breeding rights. Instead i would go with a nice group of cyps, an open water fish, and they add a lot of color.

bbboys is right on the money. A 75 gal limits your options for tangs, but the list you have, minus the trets, plus the cyps, would be a great place to start. The cyps will add some excellent color and give the upper water column some action. In that sized tank, I would avoid the jumbo cyps and stick to the utinta, mamalesa etc.
