So I got one for the experts...sold to me as a mono. Just about 9". 3 bars on one side, 4 on the other. Fish looks a little "stubby" to me the more I look at him. What are y'alls thoughts?ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1363906083.251804.jpgImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1363906097.869037.jpg

At nine inches, you should already see "belly blotching" and connecting lateral black marking. So, not a mono.

At nine inches, your or the bass shows signs of a ocell, color and body marking. Head shape/ lower lip of the bass is more prominent in monos. Monos lower lip protrudes out more then ocells with their near flush upper and lower lip.

So, I have to agree with the folks that call him hybrid.

Ocell with near flush upper and lower lip.

Mono with protruding lower lip. (Not my photo.)

Thanks for the help guys. Hayn - thanks for illustrating. I do believe I am the new owner of a Mono/Ocell hybrid.

Honestly, don't take my word for it, it's just observations that I have done from raising monos to Kelberis, to tems to Azuls and every cichla in between.

I'm here to learn as much as I can from people that actually raised bass in home aquaria, then from people that catch them like Paul Reiss that actually has hands on ( jealous).

I'm in it to learn about the species. :)

Good enough haynchinook334. At least you got much better knowledge than me.:headbang2

oneyedfish I notice that you are using black subtract in your tank and that explain why your pb is so dark. Try light coloured subtract instead and it will lighten up nicely with colour in there.:)
