I have 6 JD's. 5 are definitely male, and 1 is debatable. I think it may just be a more colorful male, not positive though as it has more blue in the gill plate than the other dempseys, but not solid blue like most females have. What do you guys think? Also this fish is the dominant fish in the tank.

One in question on top

Male or Female?

I would flip this one over adn DO IT RIGHT ;) Just to be sure.

I've seen "stray spangles" on the gill plates of males... and it looks to me like the fish in question simply has two spangle shaped spots on it's lower gill plate...

Females tend to have blue splotches that are a bit different in coloration than spangles. In the pics provided I can't see clearly enough to make a judgement to which I think it is (splotch or stray spangle).

If it's a male, I would expect these stray spangles to "migrate' up or forward as he matures/grows and that gill plate become more bare...

If it's a female I would expect those splotches to get a little larger and lose the strict spangle shape (roundish).

I do agree this one is a harder call to make... and as Tongue suggested, venting may be a better way to make a call...

But if we were throwing dice and I had to bet to stay in the game... I'd say male...
