After looking at alot of posts and threads, I'm ready to go back to a solo wetpet. I narrowed it down to a Trimac, Jaguar, or another Amphilophus other than a /Citrinellus/Labiatus. I currently have a 90 gallon tank (48x18x24) with a pair of Vontehillos running a Marineland C-360 and 400 HOB. I've tried giving the pair away for free on here but had no takers. Only one LFS (specializes in saltwater) here will take trade ins. He told me he would try an order a fish for me plus their policy is 25% off all fish purchased the same day they arrive.:naughty: It's been over a week now and he's had no luck, but he does have a male 9" Dovii at his other store. I haven't seen it yet but he claims he's had it over a year and it's only grown an inch...(Probably due to tank size and water conditions).
Before anybody goes off on me:grinno:....I'm aware that a single male Dovii could grow over 20"+ under optimum conditions and would require 180 gallon min. Common sense says F*** NO!! But aside from a Midas I owned for 3 years, I usually keep my cichlids for about a year...(there's always something new I want).
I'd be lying saying that I plan to upgrade, unless I find another deal too good to pass up (u wouldn't believe what I payed for this setup). My plan was to keep it for about a year or until it grows to 13-14 inches. I'm sure many people have said that....but it's true. Should I go against my better judgement and buy him or just move on. I know a perfect fit would be an Oscar/Midas/GT/or a (lowgrade) Flowerhorn, I've even contemplated them again if the guy at the LFS can't find what I want, but I've never owned a Wolf Cichlid and I've always wanted one.
I've typed too much now....ya'll put in ur 2 cents!!.....and no, I don't plan on buyin the fish regardless of what y'all say....but I am itchin to buy something new soon:D

I love my Dovii pr. I have them in a 48x18 right now. But, I also am always trading my fish like baseball cards.
I'dSay as long as you dont keep him too long, you'll be alright.
Also make sure there is a good market for the Dovii, for when you have to trade him in.
Why do you say lowgrade FH? No good ones around you?

@Regalblue........word!!....haha. Things were alot easier when I lived in San Diego...not sure what the market is here for Dovii in Corpus. But it might not be too good if I can't even sell the fish I have now. As for the flowerhorn, I did have a low grade zz flowerhorn ($10) before my carpintis pair. U can't find any nice ones out here.

You can control a dovii's growth by feeding less. If you want to grow him fast then feed the heck out of him and do water changes every 3 to 4 days. If you feed 1 time a day or 1 time every other day he will grow very slow.

Hmm, i don't know, it might be hard to sell him in the future and he will for sure need a bigger tank. i guess it's up to you and if you really think you can sell him when he gets too big go for it. I just find it hard to get rid of fish when they grow out but that's just me.

I fell your pain man. I'm in the same situation right now. Got my 95 setup and cycled and looking for a wetpet. Dovii was one of the options but man do they get huge! I don't know if I will be able to rehouse it because tanks down here cost both my nuts...that's right BOTH of em. 180g would cost a grand for tank only. I know a oscar or devil would be great wetpets or even a flowerhorn as I know a guy in my area that got Thailand imports for sale. What ever you decide GL with it. I'm just gonna wait and think about what to get, I've been waiting a few weeks already so I can wait longer for my wetpet.

Yeah...I slept on it and didn't go for it. Didn't really consider the ramification of trying to re-home him.....One day!!! Still couldn't get what I wanted so just went to Petsmart and picked up a 3" Red Oscar even though I told myself I wouldn't get one. Little guy/girl kept following me around. I picked out the runt of the group. I thought about a Midas....but they were covered with ich. I didn't notice until I got it in my tank that it's pectoral fins are torn and split baldly, has some HITH already, and I think he might have a sunken belly.....:duh:

For what it's worth I was in a similar boat. My most recent occupants of my 110G included Trimac, Texas, Midas & a rather large mayan. While they all looked pretty cool I ultimately found them boring and started slacking on my maintenance due to the lack of interest. I suppose I'm like you in that I always want something new so I traded them in. I had been considering quite a few "potential" monsters as a wetpet. Up for consideration were jag, cuban, mota and of course DOVI. Reaaaally hard to deny myself the dovi, but overall I was leaning toward something more peaceful. I made up my mind on getting Red bay snook, and wouldn't you know it they sold them all the day before. Like you, I went back to the good ol Oscar to renew my interest in my favorite hobby. Bought two babies just over an inch long. Trying to powerfeed them (and a gold severum) now so that in a few months I can introduce them to my GT and metae.

In any case i wish you luck w/your new little guy. Hopefully your clean water will get him all sorted out

Also if you do decide to trade out the O in favor of something else, let me know as I travel down there every few months and would be willing to keep my eye out for you.

thanks....unfortunately when I woke up this morning, the lil gangster didn't make it. They have a 14 day policy at Petsmart. I picked out another oscar that was still in the shipment bag. This one's acclimating nicely.
