Well I bot a Florida Gar at my lfs just over a week ago. When I bot him he was already 6" long and a great addition to my main tank. So I love him he's living it up in my tank even my Dad who doesn't really support my fish keeping said he's "pretty f***in cool!". Then is the dilemma, I bot 20 Feeder Minnows at the store to feed him and my Needle Fish(Who already ate them) anyways I added him and the minnows at the same time 2 days later there are none left so I buy 10 the next morning I have to run out to the store and buy 20 more to tie him over for a few mroe days. I've spent almost $10 in let alone a week for Feeder Fish for him mostly... What else can I feed him? I looked at Frozen Blood Worms or maybe even Forzen Krill? Anyone have any info on what they feed theirs?

As a side not he's eating like a King... He's grown 2 inches in length and about a inch in width in just a week:ROFL:

I don't know how to edit post on this forum but I made a mistake he's not in my main tank... I'm raising to put him in my main tank.

i was also thinking about it... Can i feed my Gar frogs?????

live is not advised although i feed my fair share. they will eat frogs. more advised to feed shrimp and prepared foods:)

I dont know much about gars, but like most fish, you can feed them several things, but getting them to eat it is soemthing else.

I dont mind live foods, I am against gold fish and rosy reds, theyre just unhealthy in the long run, or even the short run sometimes.

What you can do if you wanna experiment, just buy like 2 different foods, and buy a small amount. Something to experiment with without losing too much money. Use this food to try and feed them. Switch it around and experiment and see where that takes you. But always remember to have a food supply to fall back on if the fish doesnt eat. You dont want it to die.

if you have the room, you can breed feeder fish to feed to your predatory fishes.

Get an old bath tub, or a LARGE plastic container and put it in the backyard (for warmer climates) or in a back room (for colder climates).

Throw in some fast-breeding fish such as creek guppies and presto, a constant supply of feeder fish. It will take a few months to get going as the guppies breed and grow, but you'll have a great supply in no time.

The alternative to growing your own is going down to the local creek and netting them straight from the water. Keep them in a small tank at home until feeding time.

You can also make your own non-live foods by visiting the local butcher and buying liver, heart etc and blending it all together then freezing it in little cubes. Just pop a cube into the water as needed.

Gar will eat almost anything given enough time and effort.

I would love it to eat flash frozen or flake food but I don't see that ending well for some of the other fish in my tank.

Transitioning them onto prepared foods is easier the younger they are...although it's still very much possible at any size/age. If the tankmates will be in danger then they probably shouldnt be in there anyway.

I've seen Needles eat each other when food supply runs out... I don't want that to happen in my tank
