Hey Guys,

A local guy has a couple gar for sale. When I looked at them, there appeared to be 2 different types of gar in the tank. I had him send me a quick photo of each "type". Please help ID, I am planning on getting them, but would like to know what they are.

I bet they are both Florida. Just me.

both look like floridas to me.. the bottom one looks like he's going ot have some impressive spotting as it grows. top one looks like it's slightlt larger and the dominant fish in the tank.

I guess he bought them as some being florida, some being spotted, although he felt they were all florida and is selling them as such.
I was just surprised that half of them (or so ) look like the top one and the rest like the bottom one - so I just wanted to be clear on what they are.

Thanks in advance!

both of them look like Florida gar to me, they look wash out and stress.

given the original and newer post info from the OP, i would say both are FLGs. the top one looks like it could have been SNG, but at that size that call is very difficult to make. given the added info, i would assume both are FLGs.

to the OP - Florida gars have highly variable patterns when young (all gars do actually), so you will see quite a bit of variation within the species, within a population, and even within the same batch that arrives at an LFS or seller. good luck--

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate everyone taking the time.
Just to clarify, He is selling them as FL gar. When I saw the fish I asked why they looked so different. He said when he bought them some were supposed to be Fl and some spotted. I did not buy any when I was there, and asked for the photos to clarify what they are (I did ask for photos from the top as well) I will post more photos if I can get them.
I am going to get a couple either way, just wasn't sure if I should ask for one vs the other. I may go with the top ones just in case they turn out to be short nose.

Thanks again!
