Doctors F n S site says the following concerning the

Nova Extreme SLR T-5 Fixtures

DO NOT place fixture underneath a canopy or hood. This light fixture is designed to be placed above an aquarium. It is not intended to be placed under a canopy. The light fixture is to be used over completely covered aquariums only.

I have one of those oak canopies over my tank.. Does this mean I can't use this light, or does it mean I can't attach it to the bottom of the canopy?

It means if you do that, they won't fix it if it breaks.

The main thing is under a canopy they don't feel it will receive enough air circulation to cool it off. If you want to use it you probably just need to get a cooling fan for it but their warranty probably won't cover any damage under warranty if used under a canopy.
