Hello everyone.

I'm another buffoon who needs help identifying my ancistrus:

Ancistrus02.jpg

I've looked on PlanetCatfish, and I reckon he's probably either a.pirareta or a.maracasae. I know they are both at the top of that site's list, but I really did look through as many as I could before I went dyslexic for the evening.

So what do you guys reckon? Am I close?

Cheers for any help or mockery you want to throw at me. S'all good. :-D

yup, agree with PinkPanther- Ancistrus sp. '3'. They are the most commonly imported Ancistrus sp. as they have been farm bred for so long now. Theres no locality to go with them though.

Hopefully this means that my chances of getting him a girlfriend in the future are pretty good, since he is such a commonly-found type.

Thanks guys

Yes, you'd hope so. However due to their being over 60 recognised species and a lot look close to identical, it is advised that you buy a group at the same time, from the same batch. This probably doesn't apply as much in this case, because it isn't WC.

Yeah I know that's usually the problem. So far I've been lucky. My original ancistrus pair had babies. One of the female babies has since paired up with a male I got from a totally different shop (despite them both only being very little!). That kinda proved to me that the local supply of ancistrus is flooded with fish of the same type, allowing them to interbreed.

So long as the new, adult male I have now was bought locally, and the local supplier of ancistrus hasn't changed in the last 4 or 5 years (the adult male is probably younger than that), then there's a good chance that if I ever did want to get him breeding, a wife shouldn't be too hard to find.

Cheers davo. :)
