November hasn't been a good month to my ornates. A few weeks back my 7 year old male died. Although today is already December, my 4 year old female started to have bloat a week ago. It's been fighting to live and I've been treating it with all the possible info learned here from MFK but sadly it passed away tonight. Two large ornates gone in a matter of weeks.

Man, I feel sorry for you. I lost my colony in a span of 1 week a couple of months ago. We had no idea what was the cause, water params were ok. Again sorry for you loss :(

How have you been treating it?

Thanks raj. Wow if ever my whole pop dies on me, that'll be the day I quit this hobby. I guess the only way to recover is to shop for some replacements, if the budget allows it.

How have you been treating it?

Tom, been following the health issue reference guide about bloat here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...d-health-issues-and-answers-(reference-guide)

I know your pain although its not with ornates I'm also on my way out of the hobby because of some mysterious deaths although they are getting better for me I hope the best for you and that you somehow manage to over come these tragedies.

I would combine the Metro with Kanamycin. I would also do a Meth blue epsome salt bath. I a five gallon bucket of tank water disolve 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt per gallon of water, add one teaspoon of meth blue and place fish in the bath for 30 mins. While fish is in the bath do a 50% water change add one tablespoon of salt per every 5 gallons of water and treat the tank with a full strength dosage of Metro and Kanamycin. Discard bathwater when done, give this bath one a day for 5 days or until you see the fish comming back to normal.

Oh man I'd be crying.. that's terrible. I hope I never have a mysterious bichir death, I'd drive myself MAD trying to figure it out

Time to restock I guess. My friend from the lfs told me 4 10 inchers arrived at around $25 so it's budget destroying time. Sad to hear you're heading out of the hobby.

Tom, I will keep the Kanamycin in mind next time (though I hope not) anyone in the pop has bloat. I did the epsom salt bath along with the metro (flagyl) treatment but without kanamycin, thanks!

Wow... Sorry for your loss... Two loving and big ornate gone in just a month... Hope you'll get better! Good luck for you and the ornates!

Thanks, yep, the 7 year old was my first poly when I started the addition. Sad part of having pets but must keep going on, restock time!

Had to hold them back esp when my 7 yr old passed. Sucks but must hold fast and restock.
