I'm wanting to build a plywood aquarium 4'x8'x 39" high. I found 1" 7 ply plywood at my lumber yard for $66.00 a sheet. My plans are laminating 2 sheets together for all sides and bottom. There will be Euro bracing with 3 cross braces. I will be fiber glassing all seams and using Pond Armor. The viewing window will be 87"x30" and I will be using 3/4" low iron glass with a 2" silicone seal on the face of the glass. A couple of questions I have are, will the 2" of laminated plywood be enough support without a 2x4 frame? This will be in my living room and I think the 2x4 frame is ugly and takes up to much room. The next question is when I install the glass with the aquarium face down should I use 1/8 spacers on the silicone sealing area to get a even seal? I noticed on some builds there is a plywood strip between the lower edge of the glass and the bottom of the tank. What is the purpose of this and should I use this in my tank build?
