Ok so I bought some play sand. I started cleaning it, but noticed it turns really brown when wet. I dont want brown sand I want it white or at least lighter then what the play sand is. Does pool filter sand stay white?? And is it true you dont even need to clean pool filter sand? Thanks.

My pool filter sand is a white shade, with a few specks of brown/black particles. I didn't need to rinse mine much, just a few minutes in a 5 gallon bucket with water running through it. The filters took out the rest of the dust. I like how the grains are big/heavy enough that they don't cloud up more than a couple inches when my fish dig, so they don't end up in the filter or making a dust devil haze.

Thank you for the response. Yeah I'm thinking I might have to go buy some pool filter sand instead. I'm really not sure if this play sand will turn white again in the water or whatever, but I really dont like the way it looks in the 5 gal bucket at the momment. Maybe it needs to be cleaned really well. It is VERY white when dry, but this does me no good. Did you buy the pool filter sand from a pool store? I looked at Home depot and Lowls and they don't carry it.

Pool filter sand is the best if you want the lighter sands....It is also cleaner....

Play sand is just to dirty....

And just like and substrate....you will have to clean it
