I think this species is from Japan and coldwater but there was a language barrier and lots of sign language happening so this could be wrong. I am hoping someone can give me a scientific name for this species.

They are only about 4cm which doesnt help with ID. Shiny speckles and already showing some attitude.

Thanks in advance

Many thanks for replies. Especially for the great link from tropheus. This has given me enough to search for more information although there arent many photos of juvenile snakeheads about. Asiaticas are reported to be very aggressive so I may just get one fish for a species tank. Actually I thought I already had C. asiaticas but now it appears I have C. maculata (blotched). Can someone confirm? They are very fast and shy so the photo isnt the best sorry.

Is this photo (below) a juvenile of C. maculata? I have been growing some up from 2cm size and they are now about 7-8 cm.

HI,

as already stated, the young channa are asiatica.
The other could be maculata, dont think its argus, they have a different , more stripe like pattern on the sides.

Cheers brucki

I believe that is a channa argus, Eastern Snakehead. I have compared your picture with my Aqualog Fish ID reference catalog and the colors and patterns were spot on. Am I the only one who owns this Aqualog Fish ID book?
I think every snakehead lover should own one. These book are made in Germany and are hard to find. I've only seen them on Ebay. But my friend owns a fish store and he picked one up for me at the fish distributor. The version that has the snakeheads in it is called "All Labyrinths". You true snakehead lovers should check it out. It taught me a lot about this species.

Hi........

The upper ones are asiatica...I have bred them several Times!

The one below the asiatica is Ch. maculata!

Argus has more round blotches and another caudel base colouration!

Maculata has the stripes on the fin base........
