Now that my arowana setup is running smoothly i find its time to get into gars and well having gone through all the stickies in here and understanding the key essentials in successfully raising a healthy Tropical/Florida Gar i was still wondering if someone could answer a few simple queries :)

Assume that i will be buying a florida gar :)

1) Will it co-exist with black-banded leporinus?
2) If yes will both co-exist with polyps and plecos?
3) if no then will clown loaches be a good choice or will they become expensive feeders? :WHOA:

sorry if its all been asked a million times over but i just want to get things right before jumping into it :)

thanks

oops could the mods be kind enough to move this to the Gar sub-forum from this media lounge sorry

1. I don't know, don't have any experience with leporinus.
2. Polyp's make great tankmates. Pleco's not so much. If they are dwarf plecos, more likely to work, but common pleco's can be bad slimecoat eaters and don't really mix with gars that well.
3. Clown loaches could work as long as they are big enough to not be eaten.

x2 for the above, conner guess what's coming into my tank tmr:D sorry demon shall not hijack your thread anymore:)

leporinus are too much of fin nippers and will wreak havoc on the gar if you get a really bad one, so i would say no on the lep.

plecos are no good. clown loaches should be big as mentioned above, but that doesn't guarantee the gar may not take a swipe at them...and given their propensity to get ich (loaches, not the gars) even minor damage may cause problems for them.

gars are best kept with other gars or by themselves, but polys and some types of arow will work. hopefully that info helps--

I'm guessing something that looks like a cigar, but has spots? :D

i second that guess!

leps work if you feed them A LOT and STUFF THEM WITH FOOD... until they reach 6-9 inches where, they get super aggresive.

in other words, it's unlikely to work for a short period of time & is guaranteed not to in the long run.

oh ok. thanks for all the advice :)

thing is polyps are pretty hard to get [read impossible] and the four i managed to source came at a heavy cost! but yea shall try and source them and hope my gar likes them enough to leave them alone :D

and as for the lep i guess i made a bad buy...now i need to set him up in a cichlid tank :( one more tank...my wife is going to kill me !!! :D
