well i just spent the last hour reading threads about treatment and man is it confusing......

i have 8 discus, one i noticed has white string poop, he is the runt of the group. I just figured
that he was a runt because he was and still is eating, swimming, acting normal, not hiding or
anything like that. All the other fish have doubled or tripled in size since i got them. He has grown
but not much, from what i can see no bullying ect. he is currently eating blood worms, baby
red wigglers and steals some market shrimp from the rays. Now onto my concerns:

1. should i QT him and treat with GC(general cure) or just salt?
2. should i treat the whole tank, if so, with what? GC and/or salt?

i am concerned because i do not want to QT him if he has already infected the whole
tank. also there are 2 marble rays in there with them . All other fish are eating, swimming,
acting normal. I have treated discus in the past with GC with success but never had other
fish in the tank to be concerned about.

little info on the poop....

i noticed it about 3 days ago, then again today. it looks like a solid thread not segmented.
most of my other fish poop when i am feeding,, literally food goes in and poop comes out...
this guy seems to eat and then poop hours later, the only reason i know this is because i
have been watching closely.

looking for your thoughts and personal experiences, how, what and for how long you dosed?
i have read RD's threads on meds and many others but i am looking for what has worked
for you guys with rays in the tank, whether it was to treat the rays or the other fish in the tank...

Thanks .

I would treat entire tank with metro/prazi if you haven't already. The occasional white poop doesnt necessarily means parasites but could be related to acute stress, amongst other things but consistent white poop would indicate parasites to me.

Sounds to me like possibly just a result from the stress of being the runt. When a fish has an internal issue, such a S. vorten parasites (aka Hexamita), they will generally stop feeding. Also, as I am sure you already know a sick discus will turn dark, and become reclusive. Personally I would not medicate at this point, just monitor and be prepared to act if the fish stop eating. If they will take pellets, get some 1mm NLS Hex-Shield and feed twice a day for 3-4 days. If you suspect internal worms, treat with Prazi.

Thanks RD , I haven't seen anymore white poop but I'm gonna but some of that food to keep onhand

they are Captive Bred

I personally prophylactically treat any fish entering my facility with the above mentioned meds at least with additional wormers depending on species but thats just me.
