There was a huge tree/plant in my yard that got dug up. It has a nice root system, my question is, if cleaned, and baked for hours, will it work? I know it will rot slowly but there are water changes. Is this a bad idea?

Once you know what you have, do a google search with the species name and words like 'toxic' or 'leach', or other things like that. You'll probably find studies non-fish-related that will guide your understanding of that plant's potential use in a water system.
