just an additional tidbit of info. it was initially exported as ansorgii, and some specimens do have similar rectangular-ish blotch patterns in the rear half of the fish that reminds one of ansorgii. Good thing is toyin is knowledgeable and knew its not one. but the first specimen in the US still cost a bit...i know
and yeah the top one in your pic is ansorgii.
anyway heres some pics for you. the female has that ansorgii-like patterns in the rear half. But of course the overall shape of the fish suggests it belongs to the P. bichir complex (along with bichir bichir and bichir lapradei). perhaps its a locale variant of lapradei. perhaps its another P. bichir subspecies. perhaps something else. point is, we won't know for certain until someone studies the fish.
