I want to get an arowana, what kind? i don't know, but i was think either a silver, black or jardini arowana. Depends on how cheap i can find the black, than next in line is the jar, than the silver.

Q's

What is the minimum tank size for a jardini?

What is the minimum tank size for a silver or black?

What is the best size to buy them at?

Would polypterus be good tankmates?

I want the tank to be heavily planted, with very high lighting, will the high lighting trigger DE?

What other diseases are they prone to?

Thanks guys

Most say the min. is a 180. 6'x2'x2'

What is the minimum tank size for a silver or black?

240+GL 8'x2+'x2'

What is the best size to buy them at?

Whatever size you prefer. I like smaller because I find its easier to train them, but they are also more fragile.

Would polypterus be good tankmates?

No idea. Maybe someone else can answer this Q.

Plants are a nice touch, but its up to you. As for lighting, it may be a contributing factor but thing is certain about causes for DE.

What other diseases are they prone to?

None really, make sure water is clean. The only problem I ever had was minor finrot. Some report of hole in the head aka hexameta.

Thanks guys

Hope that helps.

umm you are gonana need a pretty big tank for the arrows around 200+.. u would need like a 6 X 2 X 2 tank or bigger.. around 160-180 or bigger the bette for the jardini plus they are very mean though .. but again it all depend on the personalitiy of the fish.. i might be wrong about the tank size, but my friend has some in a 160-180 tank and it fine.. i heard that baby arrow are hard to feed if they still have their egg sack.. i dink around 4-5 inch would be good.

as far the tank mates. my silver never touches my senegal. so the combo should work if do decide to get an aro

Any large bottom fish should work fine with a black or silver. Polys are good
No one knows what causes DE
The larger the better I would say 200+ also the tank needs to be wide enough for them to turn so at least 2 feet wide.
I like to buy them at around 4 to 6 inches still relatively cheap but large enough to not just die on you.
They are prone to out grow your tank lol otherwise they are easy to keep

Lots of good information in the "Arowana Info" Sticky. Its kind of a jumbled mess though since it was decided to merge 5-6 stickies into one.:screwy:

Good rule of thumb for tank size is tank length 3x the aro's length and depth/width should be at least equal to the aro's length.

With proper care, figure an adult jardini getting 24"+ with silvers and blacks getting 30"+.

thanks guys! it is appealing more and more by the second
this is a future setup, does that mean i should start growing the polys now so they are big enough to handle him?

you wont have much to worry about with the polys, unless your aro is smaller then them...then they my try to eat it...i have had a ropefish with my silver from 5" to 19" then i took the rope out for other fish going into the tank (big cats)...i have 3 sens from 5"-8" with a 5" jar right now with now problems...should look at the stickies they should answer all your questions and some you haven't though about...you will have to read through alot, but it is in there...
