I'm still way off from stocking my tank but have been thinking about the inhabitants. I've always liked Anthias, so I've been reading up on them a bit. I'm looking in to some of the smaller 3" species, and noticing that they are recommended to be housed in a 120 gallon aquarium. I kinda find it hard to believe you need a 120 for 3 3" fish. Anyone have experience with these guys. If i'm wrong i'm wrong, but it just seems a little hard to swallow.

Anthias can be very touchy fish the smaller species like purple queens tend not to do well in captivity, barletts are pretty hardy but kind of pricey tricolors and the larger square pinks tend to do better in a reef setup. they tend to stress in small tanks and do better in groups. I think alot of their hardiness has to do with the way they are collected because they are very abbundant in the wild.

I have been in the hobby for some years and reason being is in the wild Anthias swim a huge area in the wild and need ton's of room to be stress free and well. They are worth the time and investment just do your homework before you buy. And, make sure the other tank-mates will be well with the Anthias cause they can stress real easy if a damsel is going at them and that is the last thing you want is your $75.00 Anthias dying due to a $5.00 damsel.

Well for the time being I'm only setting up a 55 reef. Due to where I'm putting it I can't really go bigger. So I guess I'll have to wait on the Anthias till the next tank. I'm not a fan of damsels (except for green reef chromis, which arn't typical damsels) so they wouldn't be a problem. Any recommendations for a nice schooling fish that would do well in a 55?

I'll check on some anthias that may work for a 55 but not quite sure what I'll find give me a day or so.

cardinals are always great, dartfish are kind of hit or miss, and chromis need bigger tanks to school IME

sunburst anthias are probably the smallest ones i'd call common, a 55 would be fine

Mr. Reef - Thanks I look forward to it.

BIGGourami - Thanks I appreciate it.

Call me crazy but I prefer a school of one kind of fish rather than a hodge podge of crap. Reminds me of when you were a kid and people would build stuff outta Legos that were all different colors. That always really annoyed me.

I saw a nice school of Blue Eyed Cardinal's in a 500 gallon reef tank that took my breath away and they are beautiful and pretty hardy.

P.S. still researching the anthias for you

Any luck on the Anthias search? Would the Waitei Anthias (Luzonichthys Waitei) work perhaps. Their recommended tank as far as I have seen is very close to mine and as all my inhabitant will be on the shy side I figured they may work out. Any input would be appreciated.

Found him, Bartlett's Anthias (Pseudanthias Bartlettorum) said to be exceptionally hardy and only 50 gallons recommended tank size for a group. WooHoo!!
