guam
alright i have a hob filter... it uses a cartrige of foam and carbon in the inside of the foam

so what i did today was i moved the cartige alittle back and added a bag of ceramic rings in front of the carbon cartige

do u guys think this is a good idea
or should get rid of the carbon foam and buy a empty foam and add the ceramic rings in the foam
its not ristricing and any water flow

the filter setup is foam full of carbon then the ceramic rings was this a good idea

Depending on the bio-load / flow, the carbon will need to be replaced every month or so.

If you don't have chemicals you need to remove, you don't necessarily need the carbon.

If you can open up the old filter, you can remove the old carbon, rinse the filter in tank water from a W/C (don't use tap water) and fill it up with other media.

As long as your not restricting the flo and you clean it regularly you should be good to go.

Welcome to DIY & MIB :D.

I have 3 hang on filter on my 3 smaller tank all of them have only the biofiber and ceramic rings in them. 1 tank have goldfish in them and I only clean it every 3 to 4 months so carbon and mechanical filter is almost uselless. Unless I clean it every few weeks. The other 2 have discusin it but I do 50% WC every day so I don't need a mechanical filter.
