Anubias has black "algae" that won't rub off??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
BTW those aren't my pics. I found them online, but they look EXACTLY like what's going on with my Anubias.

I don't even know that it is an algae, just a guess.

I use tiger nerite snails. They only reproduce in brackish water so no population boom and 3 keep my 42 gallon clean. Hope this helps, I had that issue before. Perhaps cutting lighting back may help.

Just my 2cents

Cheers

This algae, or whatever it is, does not appear anywhere else in my aquarium. Not on rocks, driftwood, or my Java Fern. The duration of light would be consistent among them all. Why would this be if it truly is algae?
Also I can't do any sort of snail. I have a pack of Red-Tailed Botia in the tank, and they are basically as anti-snail as freshwater fish get.

It's caused by high organics in the water combined with excessive lighting, are you able to post your water parameters? Are you using any Co2, or carbon supplement live Flourish Excel? How long is your lighting on? Any source of fertilizers?

Literally, none of the above. I SA/CA Cichlids, and the Botia's living in the aquarium, no CO2, ferts, for plant boosting substances at all. Light is on for about 14 Hours per day. I chose to have only Java Fern and Anubias for that very reason, they are hardy and need very little extra assistance to thrive.

EDIT: forgot to list parameters

Nitrite:0ppm
Nitrate:40ppm
Ammonia:0
Chlorine:0ppm
KH Alkalinity:120ishppm
pH:7.4
GH Hardness:300ppm

Looks like a case of black beard algae. You can use hydrogen peroxide to kill it. Here is an article on the subject: http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/plants/Podio_Algae_Hydrogen_Peroxide.html

Just read your article, interesting. I have a question though, instead of "gradually" dosing the Anubias with Hydrogen Peroxide could I just fill a cup up and submerge the plant in it for several minutes.....or would this harm the plant? Regular Hydrogen Peroxide is substantially diluted in the first place.

ALSO, I have a Tetra brand Algaecide but I don't wanna put that poison straight into the aquarium just for this one plant. Instead of the Hydrogen Peroxide could I get results by soaking the plant in a cup of the Algaecide?

Thanks again
