I got him today for $2.99. I also got a green jewel cichlid to keep him company until he starts getting aggressive. I have him in a 20gallon tank right now with a 5inch jack and 2 3-4inch cons. I know it won't be long before he needs his own tank and they all need bigger ones. I'm working on it.. I was mainly wondering how to sex him/her and what requirements I need to breed them.

here are a few pictures of him and his tank/tankmates.

That is not a Buttikoferi, it's a Kenyi. Scientic name is Pseudotrpheus lombardoi. They are mbunas from Lake Malawi. They get to be 5-6 inches, I have seen some that may have been over 6 inches, but 5 is more typical. Young ones are blue, but maturing males turn yellow. They should have some vegetable material mixed into their diets. Kenyis can be very nasty and are well skilled at fighting, especially compared to non-mbunas.

damn it! You're right, the tank I got him from had all kinds of stuff thrown in there and I was just assuming he was the butti because all of the rest were clearly convicts. I wasn't sure what a baby buttikoferi looked like I just assumed that was it.

I'm really disappointed now because I thought I had a butti. I like him either way thought, I just feel kind of retarded. Any pics of baby buttis would be helpful for the future lol

thanks a lot. I just got back from the store I got them at and was asking the guy about them. I looked around the tank that they were supposedley in but didn't see any. The closest thing I found was a real pale convict whom of which I bought and now that hes home he darkened up :(

I had the same thing happen except the guy actually told me they were Butti's, turns out they were Talapia Meriae instead.

Thats a great deal for a kenyi. And by the way, they are not Pseudotropheus, but Metriaclima.

Yeah, Pseodotropheus is rather outdated and generic, like Cichlasoma. I figured it was in another genus by now. "Metriaclima" has a nice ring to it, I like to say it out loud.

Metriacilma

Aaahhh.

Nice looking Kenyi either way. I have one and he's one of my favorite Africans. Always busy and looking for trouble.
