I bought this calligraphy plate from Turkey and believe it is written in Arabic. Can someone translate it in English for me.

Look up “Tugra Besmele” on google. Lots of of symbols that look close to yours.
It’s a type of calligaraphic monogram, seal, or signature. According to google of course.

Looking a bit more I found this with the saying
“In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” at the bottom. Maybe that’s what it means?

Yes, it does resemble Tugra Besmele. It’s Turkish written in Arabic alphabet. It’s an artistic style of calligraphy that multiple words are overlaid into a block.

It says from bottom to top

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم.

Meaning: in the name of Allah the merciful the beneficent

Thanks. It’s a fascinating way to overlay a sentence into a block and is it easy to recognize the individual words apart.

I think Arabic and Chinese are two most artistic language that highly value calligraphy. Turkey after WWI has abandoned Arabic alphabets and adopted Latin. So is the symbol written in Arabic language or ancient Turkish using Arabic alphabets.

This beautiful statement is how Allah (the Creator of all that exists) starts 113 out of 114 chapters in the Quran. We believe the Quran to be the speech of Allah and since that is how He starts, that is how we start many rituals

No, this is not a start of a religious discussion. He is explaining culture, which often intertwined with religion. This is why Church, mosque and temple are tourist spots in every nation.

To satisfy my cultural curiosity, can you answer my other questions posted.
