i went with a friend of mine the other day - "Red_Terror" on MFK - to a cichlid convention and i just wondered if there was anything like that for bichirs. even if its just a tropical fish thing that happens to include polys. im in Georgia so anything in Atlanta will be fine for me. also, what is this i keep reading about, its like Oddball gave away a hundred bichirs to MFK members? im a bit of a new member here so maybe i missed something.

I wish :( I haven't read of anything similar to that in asian countries either which is weird because they are hardcore poly keepers too.

Oddball is the moderator that's into fossils, carves sculptures out of mammoth teeth, and wields the hammer of authority pwning noobs and long time members a like.

Oddballer is the founder of Team Baller, and owns a fish transshipping company, and punks Li every chance he gets  There's a thread in the photo lounge called "oddballer's imports", it's one of the best picture threads around with all kinds of stuff to see see, rare, exotic, etc...

He is the one who brought over 100 fish to give away at the meet. There were frontrosa, veil-tail oscars, silver arowanas, hampala barbs, baby peacock bass, endlicheri bichirs, delhezi bichirs, long fin senegalus bichirs, maybe a few others I can't remember. It was really cool though.

that sucks. so no luck on even a tropical fish get together? maybe if bichir conventions arent being held and there is enough of a demand someone should start. iv wondered though if there just isnt enough poly keepers to give rise to such things. maybe we could start a monster fish keepers conventions and as part of it have bichirs. there's got to be enough demand for something like that. this has my vote. i say we get ball rolling and get some events organized. it would be a great plus to at least hear some bichir experts speak and broaden my FYI horizons. Anne and Oddball im sure have some great pointers *hint* *hint* ;) how bout it guys? sound good?

I've thought about this before too, starting a bichir keeping club, and somehow making ti 'official' and holding an annual 'show' with awards and standards and what not.

Would be sweet! :)

I know this has almost nothing to do with the current situation, but how do you pronounce bichir? Is it bich-er? or bicker? or bisher? some feedback would be nice because it's kinda tough describing a fish to someone when they're wondering why someone would name a fish after a female dog...

Some people pronounce it like a female dog, but most say biker (like a motorcycle rider).

I say bisher, like fisher with a 'B' instead.

From what I've read, there really isn't a correct way, but we all laugh at each other's way of saying it.

Some people say conjickus, I say congeek-us :D

ya there basically isnt an official way to say it. its just how ever your comfortable. i say brisher or bisher like Cohazard.

if someone were to start an bichir organization that would be awsum. i would join. im too busy with college and work to try and start a local chapter right now otherwise i would research myself how to establish something like that. props to whoever starts it.

i say it like "bi-ker" (so almost like a motorcycle rider, but instead of 'biker', i say the 'bi-' sound like in 'bi-weekly'). i just can't stand calling them 'biker' like a motorcycle rider :D so i just switch it up a little, i feel that sounds the best anyway LOL

Haha, I like that, Infblue. I have my bichers in my living room and people always ask what kind of fish they are. I say "biker" and it total throws them. The second time they ask I just say "poly".
