I bought some Tetrachiclid pellets for a friend of mine, the fish seemed to love them, you could even hear an audible crunching noise while they ate the food, the water conditions were doing quite well, Nitrates were 20 Ammonia/Nitrites were both 0 the before water change. Changed 20% of the water on the tank and started to give the fish the new food. 2 days later all the fish in the tank that were eating the food were dead, when I tested the water for them the Ammonia was 1.0 Nitrite was .75 Nitrate was 10. The first 3 fish died on friday, and the last 2 died saturday each being between 4 - 7 inches in length. Now the first fish sat in the tank for atleast 24 hours before I could come to clear out the tank, 3 of the 5 fish floated and 2 sat on the bottom of the tank. One of them had its intestines coming out its pooper, the only remaining occupent of the tank was a 8 inch plec that would keep coming to the surface for air about every 2 min. In particular one of the fish (Red Zebra I think) was a real trooper and had been through a lot of bad water conditions prior to me helping her set up a proper home for the fish in the first place. The tank just for note is a 90 tall, with a Ehime 2217 filtering the tank. The only thing that we could come up with is that the food killed the fish. Has anyone else had any issues like this? Originally the fish were just on flake food, then switched to the tetrachiclid chiclid sticks I think they are calld. I felt bad because at first I thought it could have been something I did, but I know that the tank was good when I left.
It is possible that the first 3 fish died which resulted in the last 2 dieing from poisoned water.

Could you give some more info´s concerning the foodquality like protein, fat, carbohydrates....all ingredients and so on.
:)

There were/are some food recalls. Don't know if your type is included, but I had some that were/are and chucked it ASAP.
Sorry to hear of the loss.

You were using Tetra food? That stuff sucks. GEt some Hikari or Omega One.

hmmm...I love the big floating tetra sticks. Economical to buy the three pound box.

I am even using Tetra Jumbo sticks now for my 18 inch yellow fin barbs.

my fish have all grew up on tetra foods (cichlid sticks, colour bits, tropical crisps etc)..

There were some food recalls, but I don't recall tetra foods being on them..

the fish likely died from the mini cycle that occured after the water change (ie ammonia and nitrite spike).

but the ammonia and nitrite would not be a direct result of using the sticks, unless the the tank was overfed.

but that can happen with any food, not just Tetra...

I think their food is some of the best dried food out there..

Hikari is better but at 3 times the price for the same amount..

Never had any problems with tetra foods, in fact my fish would rather have Tetra Doramin or Tetra Prima than Hikari Chiclid Gold. I agree with 12volt man that it sounds like your tank went threw a mini cycle, If it was the food it would effect everyone who bought the same food from the batch you bought.

Tetra food has always been good to my fish. My oscar only eats TetraCichlid Jumbo Sticks as a staple and is doing beautifully. It doesn't make sense for a food to be any type of cause for a mini-cycle which it sounds like. There must be another reason.
