Hi MFK

Ill like to mix some bottom dwellers with my gars.

I keep cuben, tropical, Florida's.(Am looking for some Long and short nose gars as well)

i Have a pair of motoro rays with them now. Thinking of taking them out and try some other stuff like Bichirs. Will RTC,TSN or a hybird will that monster hold up with them?

Ill also want to know if my gar combo can last forever? Will my cuben or tropical gar grow too big and eat my florida up?

Thanks MFK

I keep the same combo as you (trops, cuban, florida) and big catfish with barbels was not a good combo, beat up often. Rays did not work in the long run. Polypterus should work if they are big.

The gar combo should do fine, but keep an eye on the tail fin of the Floridas. Make sure the nipping and fraying doesn't get too severe.

I've been told more 'n once SAL's make good tank-mates... as do AUL's... I didn't have any issues w/ my ornate Bichir, or larger spiney eels ( Fire eels worked well with my Floridas, and atm I have a larger leopard eel which is doing fine, a smaller one who needs to be removed because he is getting beat up on abit). I'm finding the bottom dweller should be considered "non-aggressive" or at least "non-territorial" but be able to stand up for itself... and as large or larger then the gar in general. I'm finding my Cuban to be the deciding factor on tank-mates, he is def more aggressive then my floridas.

I kept polys with my shortnose and florida gars.....only problem I had was when my ornate snatched food from shortnose and went in the cave and ate it.

Polys work great. SA and Aussie lungs are gar safe, though I haven't presonally tried this. I house mainly larger doradid catfish with my gars. They work great for me and I haven't had any issues. Main things I would look for is something non aggressive, calm or slow moving, and gets big enough not to be considered a snack yet not big enough to eat the gar. Also try to avoid silvery fish.

I'd go with some Polypterus that get big such as P. endlicheri or P. bichir. From what I understand, ornate bichirs can be nippy and aggressive, so I'd avoid those just to be safe. Australian lungfish can work very well as can South American lungfish; just be sure to watch for any any aggression from the gars and/or the SAL.
