I have a tank with discus. Ph is 6.4 soft water basicly no nitrates or amonia and the discus i have are fine but i purchased one yestarday and he is just staying at one corner of the tank and not eating. does anyone think he is just adjusting or should i worry?

i got some discus myself, but aint an expert. can try to help out though.

your water is fine for the discus, and the new guy should be adjusting as u only got him yesterday..

but you gotta make sure that, the others in the tank are somewhat the same size as him. if the is smaller than them, he will get bullied, stressed out and eventually die. the thing about discus is that you gotta keep them of around the same size...

let us know how it is again.

i had a feeling it was because i just got him. I have him and another and they are both around 3 inches in a 55 gallon for now. my dad wantsme to setup a 150 gallon discus tank ( i have to set it up and take care of it he nows nothing about fish) they will be going into that with other discus. I have two whisper filters rated for 60 gallons a piece on it right now but will soon only use one of them and a magnum 350. plenty of filtration. the only thiong that may upset the discus is the tank seems to be cycleing.

ya, it is coz it just came in, so give it some time to settle down.

but do remember that if u set up ur discus tank, if u want to keep adult discus, make sure all are adults, like wise the same goes for babies and juviniles..

To avoid a lot of problems with discus always check the PH of the water the new fish is in and do a slow drip over 60-90 min if they are not the same.

I would also recommend using the garlic from seachem to soak their food in to kill any internal paricites that the newcomer may bring....and please for the love of your fish keep the temp at least 87 degrees F. Many things like ich can't live at this temp

i do weekly water changes on the 180 discus tank i keep at my work in a lfs. i mix a 50 gallon barell of water and heat it the night before. I mix 2/3 RO water and 1/3 conditioned tap water. it always comes out a perfect 6.8 pH that the discus love. they usualy have a pH of 7.0 at weeks end so when I add the new water it balances out nicely. I would say use this trick. it works very well.
