any diy bio filtration for canister filter?????

I'm going to have a couple trays free in my canister filter and was wondering if there are any diy cheap biological filtration media???
I have seen those colored dish sponge things for wet/dry setups, would they work in my canister or would it possible stop up the system/water flow?

Got any extra gravel? You can put some in your canister.

I would go to your local nursery and buy a bag of pumice. Place a piece of fiberglass screen in the bottom of your media tray. It'll work like a charm and is very inexpensive.
