I've just inherited 2 pairs and though I've kept several central and south americans before I'd like your input if you have some experience with them. Mine are definately cavers and diggers but awesomely beautiful fish! What tank mates? I put mine in with an 8 inch ornate bichir and a few pink convicts for now but I have a feeling they'll take over the tank.

Nice looking female. She has become one of my favorite cichlids and greets me every time i walk in the room. I would love to get a male for my female but recently she seems to have taken a liking to one of my male HRPs. She is spending all of her time cleaning out a spot in her cave so i'm thinking they will be breeding here some time soon. I'm kind of curious that if this happens how the fry will turn out. With the colors of both i'm hoping they will turn out to be beautiful cichlids.

excelent someone already beat me to the link of my thread! Nicaraguensis are one of the unappreciated cichlid species, many people look at the drab juveniles and don't ever see themselves owning one but the same people who spend all their money on F1 festae for their colour and size fail to realise that not only do male Nicaraguensis get quite big (at least as big as a female festae) the female Nicaraguensis is one of if not the only CA/SA cichlid to show bright blue and yellow colours. They seem to get on well with less aggressive species like HRP and Severums but my Male can be very aggressive when he wants to be. It's more chasing and less harming though.
They like vegetable matter in their diet and from what I have researched they are the only Central or south american cichlid with non adhesive eggs (they dig a pit and gather the eggs into it and guard them)

Enjoy your Nicaraguensis cichlids!

this my big male and his girlfriend(they never spawned). He was the odd man out when my growouts paired up,so he ended up w/her!
