125 Gallon 72x18x22 ? not for life no true gar will sorry for even the smallest true gar the shortnose you'll need a tank at least 30 inches wide-Anne

Just as Anne said, shortnose (Lepisosteus platostomus) are the smallest species of true gar and will need a tank at least 30 inches wide and about 6' long. :)

Yeah, stock tanks are chap and easy to find... $150 for a 300 gallon. And it's still easy to view your fish, even though it's only from the top. Or, you can get a 450 gallon poly bin for around $400, and you can install viewing windows in them. If ya sold the 125 I'll be that you could afford them pretty easily, and then you could get quite a few other cool larger fish. Or, if you don't want to upgrade, you could simply sell the gar when it outgrows your tank... I'm alway willing to buy gars, lol. And it could live in that tank for about a year, maybe more. Also, needlefish are very gar-like and only get to around 12". :)

You could think about needlenose gar from asia. They like warmer water and only get 15" Just a suggestion though

i hate asking these questions, but its hard to find a true answer because any information i find is related to game gar, as apposed to aquarium keeping. was wondering if any gar would fit in a 6' (l) x 3' (w) x 2' (h) Lepisosteus platostomus is the only one i could think of but would it be happy in there?
