I was just wondering if anyone knows of any good deals on canister filters right now. I'm looking for a second canister to use in conjunction with my Eheim 2217 on my 90 gallon. I absolutely love my 2217, and would love to pick up a second, but don't want to pay what I did for my first one. Extra filtration is always a bonus, but really, I'm terrified that someday something will happen and my Eheim will quit working, and when that happens, I don't want to have a bunch of big fish with no filter for them. I was going to pick up one of the $75 Fluvals off eBay a while back, and the day I went to buy one is the day they raised the price to $115.

Any great deals like that around? I don't need anything huge or anything, but I'm looking for something that will run reliably and at least help out with the Eheim, and be able to keep the tank afloat if something happens to my Eheim. I have a couple large old HOB filters that I can put on in a pinch, but I'd really like to put a second canister on and try to avoid those all together.

I wouldn't mind setting up this secondary filter to run entirely mechanical, and rely on the Eheim for biological, so if it's something easily cleaned, that's a plus. But really, the cheaper the better!

Thanks.

I would say AC110 but they raised the price on those too. I would honestly say that the 2217 at DR fosters or Ebay is the best deal going. I love these eheim classics.

i wasnt too sure about the jebo canisters at first (it was used)... but ive got to say im pretty sure im going to pick up another one or three new if this one holds up for another few months..

wither bigals or drfs is doing ac110s for like $75 or something.. not great but better than normal

With a 2217 and an ac110 pumping out 500 GPH thats decent filtration for a 90

I highly doubt something will happen do your eheim. The classics are probably the most reliable thing in the aquarium industry, I've heard of stories of ehieim classics running 10 years straight and sometimes even 20+ years of operation

Big Al's is currently running a special on Fluval's. He also has the AC 110's at a good price.

I definitely don't want a HOB, and as I said, I already have several (I think 6?) big HOB filters, so there's no way I'm going to spend money on one for this tank. I specifically ONLY want a canister. My tank has bichirs and a gar (for now- I KNOW he'll need something bigger), so I keep the water level down and don't want to listen to a HOB splashing.

Dennis, that's what I hear, and that's a big part of why I bought my Eheim, but I still worry about things like an impeller breaking and killing off all the BB in the canister. I'd rather just be safe than sorry. I don't run 2 filters on every tank I have, but between my three smaller tanks, I have 5 filters up and running plus a powerhead & sponge hooked to it, so there's always something I can move to a tank in need of a filter. The 90 gallon will be my only large(ish) tank and that will be my only cultured filter. And if I decide I don't need it on the 90. . . Well, it's easier to talk the wife into setting up another aquarium if I already have a filter than it is to talk her into letting me buy another whole setup.

Thanks for the input. I think I may go with another Eheim. Even looking at the Fluvals on ebay going for $115, ad media into that, and I'm still going to be spending the same as what my 2217 cost me.

Edit: Started the message before you posted about BigAl's. . . I'll check that out! Thanks.

Oh, Chester, which Jebo do you have? I've heard some horrible things about them, but I've also heard that the newer models are MUCH better.

Does yours say anything about the electronics being UL listed? It makes me nervous to have electronics near water that aren't. . . Other than that, a Jebo might be an idea, especially since it's only a secondary filter.

ive yet to find one that IS UL listed.. but think of it this way... original gameboy was also not UL listed and millions of children had them (ive still got one and its less than 5 feet away and still works great)... plug it into a GFI outlet and call it a day..

at the moment ive got a........ 828?.. i think...
the disconnects are total crap and i highly reccomend NOT adjusting the hose directions more than you need to.. mine leaks.. or well.. did before i siliconed the crap out of everything... at the same time i got it used and paid less than $40 for it.. the only place ive found replacement parts is on ebay (the seller is local so that works well)... im not sure what its rated for.. ive got it on a 40gallon at its doing a great job... ive got a wad of sponge over the outlet so my theory is that im never going to have to clean it.. we will see how that goes...

Man, even the Jebos are going more expensive now. . . I see people saying they got XP3s for $80 and Fluval 404s for $75 (and I'm still kicking myself there. . .) and I remember seeing Jebos for $60 with free shipping, and now they're $35+ more. The best price I can find is 2 of them for $130. Even thought I really don't need 2. Or even 1 . . .

I think maybe I'll just hold out and wait for a while. . . See if I can find a great deal on something else.
